Partner visas for Brisbane couples

Partner Visa Applications in Brisbane

Navigating the migration process can feel overwhelming, but with MigrationBuro, you are never alone.

The partner visa process is one of the most document-intensive and emotionally charged applications in Australian immigration. If your relationship is genuine, the application needs to prove it — and proving it to the Department of Home Affairs requires more than a few photos and a declaration. Couples in Brisbane applying for a partner visa (subclass 820/801 for onshore, or 309/100 for offshore) need to understand what evidence is required, what the processing timeline realistically looks like, and what happens if the Department asks for more information. MigrationBuro has managed partner visa applications for couples in Brisbane since 2007. Call 1300 VISA OZ for a consultation.

WHY BRISBANE COUPLES CHOOSE MIGRATIONBURO

Brisbane has a large and growing population of skilled migrants, international students, and working holiday makers whose relationships with Australian partners move toward permanence. Couples in Fortitude Valley, Southside suburbs like Sunnybank and Mount Gravatt, and the inner north are navigating a process that the Department processes across years, not weeks.

MigrationBuro handles both onshore and offshore partner visa applications. Andy Heathcote (MARN 0850840) has managed partner and family visa matters since 2007 — nearly 20 years. The practice is deliberately small: every case is reviewed by a registered agent, not processed by a junior coordinator following a checklist. We tell you upfront if the evidence is thin. We do not lodge applications we do not believe in.

OUR PARTNER VISA PROCESS IN BRISBANE

Step 1
Consultation

Consultation. We assess the relationship evidence available, the sponsor's circumstances, and the applicant's visa history. We tell you whether the evidence base is strong enough to lodge and what additional material you should gather before doing so.

Step 2
Evidence Preparation

Evidence preparation. A partner visa requires evidence across four areas: financial, social, commitment, and household. We provide a detailed evidence checklist specific to your relationship and circumstances — generic checklists produce weak applications.

Step 3
Application Preparation And Lodgement

Application preparation and lodgement. We prepare the online application, review every document, and lodge. For onshore applications, the applicant receives a bridging visa that allows them to remain in Australia while the application is processed.

Step 4
Waiting Period

Waiting period. Partner visa processing is measured in years, not months. The Department currently takes over a year for most applications. We keep you updated and manage any further information requests.

Step 5
Two-stage Grant

Two-stage grant. Most partner visas are granted in two stages: a temporary visa first, then permanent residence after two years of living together. We manage both stages.

Some frequently asked questions

Answers to some questions we often hear from people in your situation.

How long does a partner visa take to process in Brisbane?

Processing time depends on whether the application is onshore (820/801) or offshore (309/100) and on the Department’s current queue. Onshore applications are currently taking over 12 months for the temporary stage; offshore applications can take longer. These are indicative figures — processing times fluctuate and the Department publishes current estimates on the Home Affairs website. The best way to manage the wait is to lodge a complete application with strong evidence from the start.

What evidence do I need for a Brisbane partner visa?

The Department assesses four categories of evidence: financial (joint accounts, shared expenses), social (shared activities, friends and family who know you as a couple), commitment (statements from both parties, future plans), and household (cohabitation evidence). Strong applications have multiple documents in each category. Thin evidence in any one area increases the risk of a request for further information or, in borderline cases, refusal.

Can my partner work in Australia while the partner visa is being processed?

If the application is lodged onshore, the applicant is granted a bridging visa (BVA) that typically allows unrestricted work rights. The exact conditions of the bridging visa depend on the applicant’s previous visa type. For offshore applications, the applicant must remain outside Australia and cannot work in Australia on the basis of the pending application alone.

What is the difference between an onshore and an offshore partner visa?

Onshore: subclass 820 (temporary) and 801 (permanent). Applied for while the partner is physically in Australia on a valid visa. The applicant can remain in Australia on a bridging visa during processing. Offshore: subclass 309 (temporary) and 100 (permanent). Applied for while the partner is outside Australia. Each has different processing timelines and requirements — we advise on which pathway is appropriate for your situation.

Can a de facto partner apply for a partner visa in Brisbane?

Yes. The partner visa covers both married and de facto couples, including same-sex de facto partners. For a de facto application, the relationship must have been ongoing for at least 12 months before lodgement (unless there are compelling circumstances). The evidence requirements are the same as for married couples — the Department assesses the genuineness of the relationship, not the legal form of it.
