For UK citizens building a future in Australia

Migrating from the UK to Australia

Australia gives UK citizens no shortcut. Your qualifications usually translate well, but you sit the same points tests and skills assessments as everyone else, and picking the right pathway first saves months.

The UK is consistently among the top source countries for skilled migrants to Australia, and the recognition of UK qualifications in the Australian system is generally strong. UK trade and professional standards align well with Australian requirements, and English language is not a barrier.

For UK applicants, the key question is usually pathway selection: points-tested skilled visa (189, 190, 491), employer-sponsored visa (482, 186), or partner visa where there is an Australian sponsor.

UK QUALIFICATIONS IN THE AUSTRALIAN SYSTEM

Trade qualifications: UK trade qualifications in plumbing, electrical, building, and engineering trades are assessed by TRA or the relevant state licensing body. Assessment outcomes are generally positive for well-documented trade histories.

Engineering and IT professionals: Engineers Australia, ACS, and other professional bodies assess UK professional qualifications. UK engineering degrees and IT qualifications are typically well-regarded.

Healthcare: UK medical, nursing, and allied health qualifications are assessed by AHPRA. UK-trained doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals generally meet Australian recognition standards.

Points scores: UK applicants with trade or professional qualifications, relevant employment experience, and age under 40 typically achieve competitive points scores.

STEPS FOR UK APPLICANTS

Step 1 Identify your nominated occupation and the relevant assessing authority

Step 2 Obtain your skills assessment

Allow sufficient processing time, TRA assessments can take several months.

Step 3 Confirm English language: most UK applicants are exempt from IELTS for skills assessment purposes but confirm this for your specific occupation and visa subclass

Step 4 Lodge an EOI in SkillSelect and build your points profile

Step 5 Receive an invitation and lodge the visa application with supporting documents, police clearances, and health checks

Where UK applicants tend to land

The occupations we see most from the UK are the licensed trades (electricians, plumbers, motor mechanics), civil and mechanical engineers, registered nurses, and secondary teachers. Each has its own assessing authority: Trades Recognition Australia for most trades, Engineers Australia for engineering, ANMAC for nursing, AITSL for teaching and the ACS for IT roles. The assessment is occupation-specific, so a UK City & Guilds electrician and a UK chartered engineer follow completely different processes.

One trap for UK tradespeople: a positive skills assessment gets you the visa, not the right to work unsupervised. Electricians in particular need a state electrical licence after arrival, usually starting with an Offshore Technical Skills Record before they leave.

Working Holiday settings for UK citizens

UK passport holders can apply for the Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa up to age 35, and under the UK free trade agreement arrangements the second and third year no longer require specified regional work. For anyone under 35 weighing up a look-before-you-leap year against going straight for a skilled visa, this changes the calculus.

Practical questions UK families ask us

Can I swap my UK driving licence? In most states and territories, yes, without a driving test, once you take up residence. The deadline to swap varies by state.

Do my NHS records come with me? No. Request copies of your GP and specialist records before you leave; Australian doctors cannot pull them across.

Will I have healthcare cover when I arrive? The UK has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, which gives visitors and new arrivals interim access to Medicare for medically necessary care. It is not a substitute for the health insurance some visas require.

Do I need IELTS? For the visa itself, UK passport holders are generally taken to meet the English requirement. Some assessing authorities still ask for evidence for particular occupations, so check both layers.

Some frequently asked questions

Answers to some questions we often hear from people in your situation.

Do UK citizens get any visa advantages in Australia?

There is no free movement arrangement between the UK and Australia. UK citizens must apply for visas in the same way as other nationalities. The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is available to UK citizens aged 18 to 35.

Is a UK police check required?

Yes. A UK police check (usually ACRO Police Certificate or Disclosure Scotland) is required for character purposes on most skilled visa applications.

Can I include my family?

Yes. Spouse, de facto partner, and dependent children are secondary applicants.

Is my UK degree recognised?

The recognition of UK degrees depends on the occupation and the assessing authority. Most UK degrees from recognised universities are assessed positively for professional occupations.

What is the difference between a 482 and a 186 visa?

The 482 (Skills in Demand) is a temporary visa, typically granted for two to four years. The 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) is permanent residence. Many 482 holders transition to a 186 after two years of employment with the same employer under the Temporary Residence Transition stream. The 186 can also be lodged directly via the Direct Entry stream if the worker holds the right qualifications and the role meets the criteria.
