For Irish citizens building a future in Australia

Ireland has a strong tradition of migration to Australia, and Irish qualifications in engineering, healthcare, construction, and IT are well-recognised in the Australian system. For Irish applicants, the pathway assessment usually focuses on whether the points-tested skilled stream or employer sponsorship offers the faster route.

Irish citizens are eligible for the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) up to age 35, which provides an entry point for those who want to test the Australian labour market before committing to a permanent pathway.

COMMON PATHWAYS FOR IRISH APPLICANTS

Skilled independent (189): for Irish applicants with a positive skills assessment and a competitive points score, the 189 requires no employer or state sponsorship.

State nomination (190 or 491): where the 189 points threshold is not met or where a specific state nomination stream is available, state-sponsored pathways are common for Irish tradespeople and professionals.

Employer sponsorship (482 and 186): Irish applicants with a job offer from an approved Australian sponsor can be sponsored on a 482 with a pathway to the 186 permanent visa.

Working Holiday (417): Irish citizens aged 18 to 35 can apply for the 417 Working Holiday visa as a first step.

Where Irish applicants tend to land

Construction dominates the Irish caseload: carpenters, electricians, plumbers and quantity surveyors, alongside civil engineers, nurses and teachers. The trades go through Trades Recognition Australia, quantity surveyors through the AIQS, engineers through Engineers Australia and nurses through ANMAC. Irish trade qualifications, particularly the advanced certificate craft apprenticeships, are familiar territory for TRA assessors.

As with UK tradespeople, a positive skills assessment is not a licence. Electricians need state electrical licensing after arrival, and the process usually starts offshore.

Working Holiday settings for Irish citizens

Irish passport holders can apply for the Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa up to age 35. Unlike UK citizens, Irish applicants still need specified regional work to qualify for a second or third year. Plenty of our Irish clients arrive on a 417, find an employer who wants to keep them, and convert to sponsorship from onshore. It is a legitimate pathway, but the timing matters: leave the sponsorship conversation too late in your second year and you can end up bridging.

Practical questions Irish applicants ask us

Do I need an English test? Not for the visa: an Irish passport meets the competent English requirement. Two layers to check, though. Some assessing authorities set their own English requirements for specific occupations, and on points-tested visas a passport alone scores zero English points, so plenty of Irish applicants still sit a test to claim the points for proficient or superior English.

What police check do I need? A Garda police certificate for character purposes, plus certificates from any other country where you have spent 12 months or more in the last ten years.

Will I have healthcare when I arrive? Ireland has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, but it is narrower than the one with the UK: it covers medically necessary treatment as a public patient in a public hospital, plus PBS medicines at the general rate, with no out-of-hospital cover. It is not a substitute for the health insurance some visas require.

Can I swap my Irish driving licence? In most states, yes, without a test, once you become a resident. Deadlines vary by state.

Are Irish degrees recognised? Generally yes for professional occupations, but recognition happens through the assessing authority for your nominated occupation, not automatically.
